Among our most fearless Oscarologists, Kevin Polowy (Yahoo) makes some gutsy predictions that buck the consensus.
While he agrees that “Boyhood” is “the clear-cut winner for Best Picture, I think ‘Birdman‘s’ Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu slips in as Best Director,” he says in our podcast chat. (Listen below.) To back up his claim, he points to the frequent recent splits between the two categories: “We saw it last year between ‘Gravity‘ and ‘12 Years a Slave‘ and we saw it the year before.”
Polowy is also going out on another Oscar limb — for Reese Witherspoon (“Wild”).
“I know that Julianne Moore is the frontrunner for Best Actress,” he adds, “especially because she is always the bridesmaid, never the bride at the Oscars and, yes, it’s her time. But based solely on performance — I guess I live in a fantasy world to make that prediction – I think this is the best performance of Reese’s career. I think it’s better than the work she did as June Carter in ‘Walk the Line,'” which earned her the Best Actress trophy, of course.
