Last year, Carrie Preston won the Guest Actress Emmy for her recurring role on “The Good Wife” over such industry heavyweights such as Jane Fonda and Joan Cusack. Reflecting on her upset victory during our recent webcam chat (watch below), she revealed: “I was sitting there for a good three hours before my category even comes up and I’m noticing the whole time how in the Creative Arts Emmys they give you one minute from when your name is called to get up on stage to say your speech and leave.”
So, she decided: “‘If I win, and there is no way I am going to … they are not going to turn my mike off …’ and so when they called my name it was just utter shock but it was also ‘I had a task.’ I didn’t even kiss my husband … I bolted, I’ve never run that fast on heels in my life. And then before i know it, the speech was over and I was backstage going ‘What just happened?’ and for the rest of the night it really did felt like my feet never touched the ground; it was pure elation.”
On the hit CBS series, Preston plays the bubbly but ruthless attorney Elsbeth Tascioni. Even after five years, she admits, “It’s always such a treat to get the scripts, it’s like unwrapping a really exciting gift on Christmas morning that you don’t know what’s going to be inside but you know it’s going to be great.”
She says she was surprised when, “the next one [script] comes in and there’s this costumed bear and he’s saying anti-Semitic things and I read it and I was ‘this is so funny, but they’re never going to let that happen… there’s no way they are going to let that go on air….’ Then sure enough I had to eat my words when I saw it air … and now people quote it to me.”
She has submitted this episode — “A Few Words” — to the Emmys because “it has a really great arc for the character: you see her helping Will… you see what a shark she is… you see her sing a bit with Nathan Lane.”
She keeps her Emmy next to her husband Michael Emerson’s that he won for his guest shot on “The Practice” back in 2001. “They are sitting side-by-side on a shelf together. We have the ‘his’ and ‘hers’ guest Emmys.”
