Shocking our predictors, Luke Bryan defeated Miranda Lambert to win Entertainer of the Year at the CMA Awards. Lambert entered the awards with a field-leading nine nominations and got 4/7 odds to become only the eighth female artist to win the top prize, but Bryan, whom our predictors ranked third with 10/1 odds, pulled off an upset to win the award for the first time.
Despite losing the top category, Lambert was nevertheless the night’s biggest winner, taking four awards: Female Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year (“Platinum“), Single of the Year (“Automatic“) and Musical Event of the Year (“We Were Us” with Keith Urban). Gold Derby correctly predicted three of those races: Single, Album, and Female Vocalist. It was Lambert’s fifth consecutive win for Female Vocalist, setting a new record in the category.
Florida Georgia Line won their second CMA in a row for Vocal Duo of the Year, where they were virtually unbeatable. They led our predictions with overwhelming 2/11 odds; all but 23 users predicted them to win.
Meanwhile, Brett Eldredge defied our odds by winning New Artist of the Year. Our predictors were expecting Brandy Clark to take the prize, while Eldredge was an underdog with 25/1 odds and only 15 users backing him.
Little Big Town won Vocal Group of the Year. They were the two-time defending champions, but they were still underdogs according to our predictors, who gave them 10/1 odds against frontrunners The Band Perry.
Do you think any of this year’s CMA winners will go on to earn Grammy nominations? We’re predicting the recording academy’s four general field races: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. Musgraves earned a Best New Artist bid last year, but was beste by rap duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Below, predict the top album race.
