Watch: Colin Hanks dishes on his reluctant hero character on ‘Fargo’

Colin Hanks thinks of his character on the FX miniseries “Fargo,” police officer Gus Grimley, as “a man that’s out of his element.” As he explained during our webcam chat (watch below): “He’s in over his head and out of his depth for sure. But he definitely feels a certain responsibility to right this wrong he committed by letting Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton) go in that first episode.”

In this hit show, based in part on the Oscar-winning film of the same name from Joel and Ethan Coen who serve as executive producers, Grimley is a single father who happens upon the evil Lorne Malvo late one night at the end of the premiere episode (a “killer scene” as Hanks calls it). After several murders in a nearby small town in Minnesota, he teams with a deputy (Allison Tolman) to solve the mystery.

Created for television by Noah Hawley, the 10 episodes are midway through airing. It is a frontrunner at this year’s Emmys for Best TV Miniseries and should claim several acting slots for a cast that also includes Martin Freeman, Keith Carradine, Bob Odenkirk, and Oliver Platt.

Of the unique style and structure, Hanks admits, “We were very lucky early on that FX accepted Noah’s vision of the show. Very rarely were those actory moments rushed. A lot of times that’s the stuff that gets cut out. That’s how the Coen brothers films are. There’s a pace to them that’s deliberate. It adds another layer to the characters in the way they interact.”
