On Monday night, Carrie Ann Inaba and Len Goodman were displeased that his rumba with switched-up partner Peta Murgatroyd wasn’t traditional enough. Inaba gave them a 7 and Goodman gave them an 8, while Bruno Tonioli and guest judge Julianne Hough gave him 9s. “This side of the table’s not quite as happy as that side of the table,” said Inaba of the judges’ split decision.
The happy-go-lucky White seems like an unlikely bad boy, but this is the second time he has been docked points for playing fast and loose with proper ballroom form. His week-two tango with regular partner Sharna Burgess was also pilloried by Goodman, who gave him a 7 despite his impressive execution.
Because White is a champion athlete used to performing complex choreography on the ice, expectations are higher for his dance routines, but are the judges being too hard on him? After all, they’ve praised other stars like pop singer Cody Simpson for giving the traditional dance styles their own personal flair.
Meanwhile, White’s Olympic partner Meryl Davis has not received nearly as much criticism, earning a near perfect 39 out of 40 from judges for the last two weeks. Is she really adapting to the ballroom so much better than he is? Could Charlie’s transgressive choreography put him at risk of being sent home early? Watch his divisive performance below and then predict who will be sent home next.
