The scores have gotten better and better as this season of “Dancing With the Stars” has gone along, but have the performances really improved that much, or have the judges gotten too generous?
In the first two weeks of competition, 7s and 8s were respectable, and 9s were an honor. Recently eliminated contestant Charlie White received the only straight 9s that first night, and the following week even the top scorers received 8s.
No 10s were given at all until week three, and nobody but Meryl Davis scored that high until week five, when James Maslow received the first perfect 40 of the season. Since then, perfect scores have become common, even obligatory.
This week, on “American Icons Night,” every dancer received 10s, and four routines were given perfect 40s, while Bruno Tonioli could be seen regretfully mouthing “Sorry” to Candace Cameron Bure when he gave her the night’s lowest score, an 8.
Even 9s have started to seem like rebukes, and are sometimes greeted with boos from the audience, as Tom Bergeron pointed out after Len Goodman gave that score to Amy Purdy for her quickstep this week.
Do you think the scores have gotten too high, or have the dancers truly earned their high marks? Vote in our poll, then predict who will win “Dancing with the Stars” below.
