‘Dancing with the Stars’ recap: Meryl Davis rules ‘Party Anthem Night,’ but party’s over for Drew Carey

Meryl Davis and pro partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy were disappointed with their fifth-place scores last week, which threw them off their game during training for “Party Anthem Night,” but you wouldn’t know it from their tango; a week after James Maslow scored the first perfect 40 of the season, they delivered a flawless dance of their own and received 10s across the board.

Drew Carey wasn’t so lucky, however. Though he improved from last week, earning 32 out of 40 from judges, his “Superfreak” tango, which was described by guest judge Redfoo (of LMFAO fame) as “pimped out to the tenth degree,” turned out to be his swan song.

Candace Cameron Bure was spared elimination for the second time in a row. Though she may or may not have been in the bottom two when judges’ scores and viewer votes were combined, she nevertheless waited anxiously at the end of the night to find out whether she or Carey would be sent home, just as she did last week when Cody Simpson was eliminated. She received the lowest judges’ score again this week – a still respectable 32 for her cha-cha – so she may be in danger yet again.

NeNe Leakes may also be vulnerable. Though the judges were impressed by her showmanship – especially Redfoo, who gave her a 9 – Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli thought her technique needed work. She scored 33 overall.

Even Maslow may not be safe. He struggled with the complex choreography of his “Grease”-themed quickstep, so he couldn’t repeat the perfect marks he got for his “Frozen” dance on “Disney Night.” The judges took him to task for imperfect footwork, but despite three 9s, his total score of 35 leaves him third from the bottom.

Nearly perfect last week, Danica McKellar impressed judges with her cha-cha and earned straight 9s for a total of 36; coincidentally, Charlie White received the same score for performing the same dance style.

But the contestant who came closest to matching Davis’s gold standard was Amy Purdy. She had a mishap on the dance floor, noticeably stumbling when Derek Hough tried to dip her, but the judges didn’t hold it against her. She was given 10s by Redfoo and Tonioli, for a total of 38.
