Daytime Emmy reels: Will Kim Matula’s ‘B&B’ breakup episode win Younger Actress?

Just like last year, the 2014 Daytime Emmy acting reels are being made available for public viewing online. The roundup of episode submissions continues with Best Younger Actress. I’ve watched all five; Kim Matula could turn her first nomination into a first win for her “Bold and the Beautiful” breakup episode.

Watch her rivals’ reels:
Kristen Alderson, Linsey Godfrey, Hunter King, and Kelley Missal

Length of Reel: 8:23

Synopsis: Liam (Supporting Actor nominee Scott Clifton) finds his fiancee Hope (Matula) with his brother Wyatt (Emmy-winner Darin Brooks). At first he’s outraged that she has confided in another man, but then Hope accuses Liam of still being in love with his ex-wife Steffy and for stringing them both along.

Analysis: The first minutes of Matula’s reel belong to Clifton, at which point her role is to react to his anger. But when she counters it with anger of her own, she takes control of the scene. She sheds plenty of tears before giving Liam back his engagement ring, and her anger turns to regret as she realizes she can’t trust him.

At the very end of her reel is a brief scene with her mother (Best Actress nominee Katherine Kelly Lang), who consoles her over the end of her engagement, but while this moment contrasts nicely with the tears that came before, it doesn’t have quite as much impact.

Will she win? Watch her submitted scenes below, then predict Best Younger Actress and discuss all the submissions in our forums:

  1. In my opinion, Kim Matula has the Emmy “in the bag.” Great Emmy reel, but this past year in particular Matula has blossomed into an outstanding actress. I was always amazed she had never been nominated prior to this year, but the writers stepped up and gave her a great story and Matula more than delivered, day in, day out. She SHOULD win.

  2. That scene had me in tears but honestly, that should have been Scott’s emmy submission! Kim matula is beautiful and talented but I have seen even better scenes that could have been submitted……I wish more than anything they could have kept kim on B&B because the chemistry between scott clifton and kim matula is astounding!
