The Daytime Emmy reels for Best Supporting Actress are available for viewing online. I’ve watched all five. After five nominations in six years, will Melissa Claire Egan (“The Young and the Restless“) finally win?
Length of Reel: 8:49
Synopsis: After a confrontation with her ex-husband, Chelsea Newman (Egan) is forced to confess to current husband Dylan (Supporting Actor nominee Steve Burton) that their child isn’t biologically his.
Analysis: This is the same reel Burton submitted in the Supporting Actor race, and it’s easy to understand why both actors selected it. The episode offers nearly equal material to both (Egan as the confessor and Burton as the wronged man), and though Burton gets slightly more emotions to play — the sudden realization of betrayal, the heartbreaking loss of his child — the stakes are equally high for her, because she’s pleading not only for his forgiveness, but for his support in a potential custody battle. Her final plea — “Your son needs you!” — carries the dual weight of knowing she’s at risk of losing her son as well.
Egan is nominated against two other “Y&R” stars (Amelia Heinle and Elizabeth Hendrickson) whose scenes may be even more emotional (they involve the death of a child), and they’re both given scenes more fully focused on their characters. Egan briefly appears in Hendrickson’s reel, consoling a grieving mother, though it may not be enough extra screentime to significantly sway the result one way or the other.
