What makes ‘Despicable Me 2’ so lovable?

What’s the secret to the success of Golden Globe nominee “Despicable Me 2”? The sequel, just like the original, has earned nearly a billion bucks internationally.

“It’s a zany cartoony quality balanced with heart and emotion,” says co-director Chris Renaud.

“We love doing very ridiculous things in a professional way,” adds co-director Pierre Coffin. Having a mean central character named Dru, he likes to think: “What very embarrassing situations can we put this guy in? You always like to bash on people you don’t like. So we take this mean guy and put him in situations where he needs to be nice, where he can’t act as he would normally.”
