Don Mischer is not only producing the Emmys again this year (for the 12th time!), he’s on the Emmy ballot twice in the race for Best Variety Special.
He’s in the running for producing “One Night Only: An All-Star Comedy Tribute To Don Rickles,” which aired on SpikeTV a few weeks ago, featuring David Letterman, Jon Stewart, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Jerry Seinfeld, Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese. Also “The Breakthrough Prize,” telecast on the Science Channel back in January, featuring celebs like Conan O’Brien and Glenn Close doling out multi-million-dollar prizes to some of the leading minds in the science field.
Chris Beachum and I discuss all that with Mischer, but we really drill down on his Emmy and Oscar shows. What does Mischer think were some of the greatest – and craziest – moments? And what can he tell us about this year’s Emmycast? (He confirms that the category presentations will be clustered by genre again.)
“Producing the Emmys is fun because I was a creature of television from my very earliest days as a young boy,” he says.
