“There’s gonna be some fireworks in this one!” I proclaim in our new prediction slugfest (watch below) after our trio of Gold Derby Editors have major disagreements about who’s really the frontrunner in the Emmy race for Best Comedy Guest Actor. Despite our opposing views, we all concede that four individuals are in the running: Jimmy Fallon (“Saturday Night Live“), Bob Newhart (“The Big Bang Theory“), Steve Buscemi (“Portlandia“) and Nathan Lane (“Modern Family“).
Joining me in our latest video are Daniel Montgomery and Rob Licuria as we analyze the episodes submitted to Emmy judges as examples of their best work from the past TV season. Fallon entered his “SNL” host gig, Newhart opted for “The Proton Transmogrification,” Buscemi chose “Celery” and Lane hopes to wow with “The Wedding, Part 2.” Other nominees: Louis C.K. for hosting “Saturday Night Live” and Gary Cole for the “Veep” episode “Crate.”
Daniel thinks that Fallon and Newhart are the frontrunners, Rob echoes his Fallon prediction but thinks Buscemi is in second, while I predict Lane in first place with Fallon close behind. Last year, Newhart claimed this category as his own and two years ago Fallon triumphed here, so if one of those gents prevails it’s gonna feel like an Emmy rerun. Despite our differences, all three of us agree that this is truly a four-man race with C.K. and Cole just lucky to be nominated.
Gold Derby’s official combined racetrack odds currently find Fallon in first place with odds of 21/20, Newhart in second at 3/1, Buscemi in third with odds of 15/2, Lane in fourth at 12/1, while Cole and C.K. are tied for last place with odds of 50/1.
