Gold Derby Editors come out swinging over the three frontrunners for Best Movie/Miniseries Actor: Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton for “Fargo” and Mark Ruffalo for “The Normal Heart.” We give winning arguments for all three of them, making this one of the toughest — and most exciting — Emmy races of the year.
If this truly is a showdown between Freeman, Thornton and Ruffalo, where does that leave the other trio of nominees Benedict Cumberbatch (“Sherlock: His Last Vow“), Chiwetel Ejiofor (“Dancing on the Edge“) and Idris Elba (“Luther“)? Unfortunately, those three may fall victim to the enormous amount of buzz and industry support for “Fargo” and “The Normal Heart.”
All three of us agree that Freeman is our personal favorite in this race, but yet we’re all still predicting Thornton to win because of his movie star stature and quiet creepiness in “Fargo.” However, watch out for Ruffalo because his character gives several memorable speeches in “The Normal Heart” and could sway voters with the passion he brings to the role.
Gold Derby’s official combined racetrack odds currently find Thornton in first place with 5/6 odds, Ruffalo in second place with 13/8 odds, Freeman in third place with 25/1 odds, Cumberbatch in fourth place with 50/1 odds, and Ejiofor and Elba tied for last place with 100/1 odds.
