In our new prediction slugfest, Gold Derby Editors battle over who’s really in first place to claim the Emmy for Best Movie/Miniseries Supporting Actress. Is it an Oscar champ like Julia Roberts (“The Normal Heart“) or Kathy Bates (“American Horror Story: Coven“), or last year’s surprise Emmy winner Ellen Burstyn (“Flowers in the Attic“)? And hey, what about newcomer Allison Tolman” (“Fargo“)?
While Daniel and I are betting on Roberts to win her very first Emmy thanks to her character’s penchant for speechifying, Riley is confident that Bates will be a surprise winner come Emmy night because she plays such an over-the-top character on “Coven.” Speaking of “Coven,” two other actresses were nominated against Bates — Angela Bassett and Frances Conroy — but we don’t give them much of a chance because they’re notably overshadowed by Bates.
As for Tolman, she’s the recent Critics Choice TV Awards winner for this same category, but we remind you that last year Sarah Paulson (“American Horror Story: Coven“) won that award but still lost the Emmy to TV academy favorite Burstyn (“Political Animals“). Could the same fate befall Tolman this year?
Gold Derby’s official combined racetrack odds currently find Tolman and Roberts tied for first place with 6/5 odds, followed by Bates in third place with 25/1 odds, Burstyn and Bassett tied for fourth place with 50/1 odds and Conroy in last place with 100/1 odds..
