Emmy experts predict comedy categories: ‘Veep’ vs. ‘Orange is the New Black,’ …

Our first nine Emmy Experts have weighed in with their predictions for this year’s awards. While our Emmyologists foresee a new champ in Best Comedy Series for the first time in five years and new winners in the supporting races, they are less certain of a changing of the guard in the top two comedy acting categories. Four of our Emmyologists — Joyce Eng (TV Guide), Matthew Jacobs (HuffPo), Paul Sheehan (Gold Derby) and freelancer Ken Tucker — are predicting that the HBO laffer “Veep” will finally win Best Comedy Series on its third bid.

A trio of our pundits — Mike Cidoni (AP), Scott Feinberg (THR) and Matt Roush (TV Guide) — favor Netflix’s freshman entry “Orange is the New Black.”

Just two of them — Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby) and Steve Pond (The Wrap) — expect ABC’s “Modern Family” to claim this prize for the fifth year running and tie the Emmy record of “Frasier.”

Cidoni is the only pundit not predicting Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) to win Best Comedy Actress for the third year in row; he is predicting an upset by Taylor Schilling (“OITNB”).

However, it looks like three-time champ Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory“) has some competition for Best Comedy Actor. While four Experts (Feinberg, Pond, Roush, Sheehan) favor him, three (Eng, Jacobs, Tucker) are predicting that William H. Macy will prevail for his first bid for the reclassified “Shameless” while two (Cidoni, O’Neil) tout a victory for Ricky Gervais(“Derek“) who pulled off an upset in this race back in 2006, winning for “Extras” over frontrunner Steve Carell (“The Office”).

For Comedy Supporting Actor, only three Experts (Cidoni, Jacobs, Pond) are predicting last year’s champ Tony Hale (“Veep”) to repeat, while six think that Emmy darling Andre Braugherwill win for the rookie “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”

And in Comedy Supporting Actress, all but two of our Experts are predicting that Allison Janney, who won four Emmys in drama for “The West Wing,” will prevail for the first season of “Mom.” Cidoni and Feiberg foresee an upset by first-time nominee Kate Mulgrew (“OITNB”).
