Gold Derby Editors declare Best Comedy Supporting Actress to be a head-vs.-heart conundrum. Their heads tell them to predict Allison Janney (“Mom“) because she’s a bonafide Emmy goddess with four prior wins for “The West Wing,” but their hearts suggest maybe going with legend Kate Mulgrew (“Orange is the New Black“) who’s up for her very first career Emmy nom. And we don’t quite rule out recent two-time champ Julie Bowen (“Modern Family“) either.
Joining me in our latest video (watch below) are Rob Licuria, Charles Bright and Ralph Galvan as we analyze the episodes submitted to Emmy judges as examples of their best work from the past TV season. Janney submitted “Estrogen and a Hearty Breakfast,” Mulgrew opted for “Tit Punch” and Bowen settled on “The Feud.” The other nominees are: Mayim Bialik for “The Big Bang Theory” (“The Indecision Amalgamation”), Anna Chlumsky for “Veep” (“Detroit”) and Kate McKinnon for “Saturday Night Live” (“Host: Anna Kendrick”).
We all concede that Mulgrew is the wildcard in this category and truly makes it a two-lady race between her and the “Mom” star. Rob, Charles and Ralph are all currently predicting Mulgrew, but I’m headstrong on Janney, even going so far as to declare that this race was essentially over a year ago when Janney was first announced as the new star of a Chuck Lorre CBS laffer.
Bowen submitted a great episode with physical humor as her character battles lice, while Bialik’s stand-out scene is between her and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) where she feigns interest in his game console dilemma. And we agree that Chlumsky and McKinnon might have better luck next year if/when the competition isn’t so fierce.
Gold Derby’s official combined racetrack odds currently find Janney in first place with 4/9 odds, Mulgrew in second place with 4/1 odds, Bowen in third place with 25/1 odds, Bialik in fourth place with 33/1 odds, Chlumsky in fifth place with 50/1 odds and McKinnon in last place with 100/1 odds.
