Our first six Emmy Experts have weighed in with their predictions for this year’s awards, which will be handed out on Aug. 25 during the kudocast on NBC.
Five of our half dozen Emmyologists — Robert Bianco (USA Today), Matt Roush (TV Guide), Ken Tucker and Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil and Paul Sheehan — are in agreement that “Modern Family” will win Best Comedy Series for the fifth year running; Anne Thompson (Thompson on Hollywood) opts for “Veep.” And all but O’Neil expect reigning champ “Breaking Bad” to pick up a bookend Best Drama Series trophy for its final season; he predicts a victory for “House of Cards.”
On the comedy performer side, they all predict last year’s lead winners — Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep“) and Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory“) — will repeat. However, there is disagreement as to which featured performers will prevail.
And for Comedy Supporting Actress, four of our Experts — O’Neil, Roush, Thompson, Tucker — are predicting that Allison Janney, who won four Emmys in drama for “The West Wing,” will prevail for the first season of “Mom.” Sheehan and Thompson expect that two-time champ Julie Bowen (2011, 2012) will pick up her third prize for “Modern Family.”
Among drama performances, all of our Experts predict that recent Golden Globe champ Robin Wright (“House of Cards”) will win Drama Actress and all but one are forecasting that Bryan Cranston will win his fourth Drama Actor race for “Breaking Bad”. Roush expects Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey (“True Detective“) to win for his sole season on this new HBO series.
These six Emmyologists are predicting that Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton (“Sling Blade”) will win Mini/Movie Actor for “Fargo” and all but one expect Cicely Tyson to win Movie/Mini Actress for recreating her Tony-winning performance in “The Trip to Bountiful.” Thompson foresees 2012 champ Jessica Lange winning for the third installment of “American Horror Story.”
