Kate Mulgrew battled her way into the Emmys this year in the Best Comedy Supporting Actress race for her portrayal of Galina ‘Red’ Reznikov in the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black.” This is Mulgrew’s first Emmy nomination after nearly four decades of television work, which includes her iconic role as Captain Kathryn Janeway in “Star Trek: Voyager” from 1995 to 2001. We will ask her about her long-awaited Emmy nod when she joins us for a live chat this Thursday, July 31, at 10:00am PT; 1:00pm ET on Gold Derby’s home page.
Mulgrew’s character on “Orange is the New Black” is the head chef at Litchfield Penitentiary, which gives her considerable power over the inmates as she decides who gets to eat or who doesn’t. Before her incarceration, Red ran her family restaurant and delicatessen with her husband and became involved with the Russian mafia. Both sides of Red are featured in the episode Mulgrew submitted to Emmy judges, “Tit Punch.” Her competitors this year are Allison Janney (“Mom“), Julie Bowen (“Modern Family“), Mayim Bialik (“The Big Bang Theory“), Anna Chlumsky (“Veep“), and Kate McKinnon (“Saturday Night Live“).
