Emmy slugfest: Can ‘True Detective’ take down ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘House of Cards’? (video)

How will “True Detective” fare at the Emmys now that sneaky HBO moved it over to the race for Best Drama Series? Can it take down reigning champ “Breaking Bad” and overdue titan “House of Cards“?

Orange is the New Black” just scooted out of that category to try and snag the last laugh in the Comedy Series race. Can it win? Or will it bow to “Modern Family,” which is now angling for its fifth victory in a row. If it prevails again, it will tie the series record held by “Frasier,” but it faces serious competition from Fox’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and HBO’s “Veep” and newcomer “Silicon Valley.”

I rounded up some of our editorial team members to size up these hot Emmy contests: Daniel Montgomery, Rob Licuria, Matt Noble, Charles Bright and Riley Chow. BELOW: Watch the video or else listen to the audio podcast version. Check out Gold Derby’s podcast page at iTunes.

  1. In drama series TD has a chance, but I’m confident that Breaking Bad is going to win this one. Maybe in Lead Actor in a Drama McConaughey takes it but in Drama Series doesn’t have the same buzz as BB has for its final season.

  2. True Detective is considered a nominee for best drama but MIGHT end up back in the mini-series category. As far is Orange is the new Black is concern,it will probably get nominated in its first year only in the directing and writing categories.

  3. How is House of Cards “overdue”? It’s not like it’s been on for years without winning. This is only it’s second season, it’s way way way to soon to classify it as “overdue”.
