Will guild awards preview Emmy nominations for TV dramas?

In the past several weeks, all the guilds have announced their nominations and have just begun to bestow their awards. Although there is some voting membership overlap, they are not nearly the prognosticators for the Emmys that they are for the Oscars, largely due to their different eligibility periods.

While the producers’ and casting directors’ guilds share the June to May cycle of the Emmys, the others operate on the calendar year.  As such, using specific nominations to make Emmy predictions is a spotty strategy. Instead, it is more useful to note what series are popping up at a variety of guilds. As this indicates support across branches, these may be the eventual nominees for the series awards.

First, let’s take a look at how drama series have fared this awards season. In the days to come, we will profile the comedy contenders too. And next month, we will have a roundup of the winners.

While 40 dramas received at least one guild nomination this season, we have concentrated on the nine that registered with at least four guilds. These are listed below with notation made of multiple nominations from a guild in brackets.

Game of Thrones” was recognized by the most (12). While it was nominated the last two years by the writers’ guild, it was neligible there this year as the required paperwork was not submitted on time. The only other guild that “Game of Thrones” was not recognized by was the Camera Operators Society, the only one of the 14 guilds without an equivalent Emmy.

However, “Breaking Bad” earned the most nominations (22), with multiple bids from many groups, including the writers where it got four.

While “Orange is the New Black,” also earned four nominations from the writers, this newcomer was snubbed by the other 11 guilds for which it was eligible. Likewise, freshman contender “Masters of Sex” was also nominated only by the WGA.
