Golden Globes experts predict: ‘Boyhood’ for Best Drama, ‘Birdman’ for Best Comedy/Musical

Well, looks like we won’t get much help from the Golden Globes when it comes to predicting the winner of Best Picture at the Oscars. Among our 11 Oscarologists who have made predictions for the Golden Globes, 10 of them are backing the bid by “Boyhood” for Best Drama Picture. Likewise, 10 of our Experts are forecasting that its leading Oscars rival — “Birdman” — will win Best Comedy/Musical Picture at these precursor prizes. This overwhelming support gives each film leading odds of 1 to 5 to prevail on Jan. 11 at the 72nd annual edition of these kudos bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.

The 10 Experts in favor of the two frontrunners are: Thom GeierTariq Khan (Fox News), Michael Musto (Out.com), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Kevin Polowy (Yahoo), Anne Thompson (Thompson on Hollywood/ Indiewire),  Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Glenn Whipp (L.A. Times), Susan Wloszczyna (RogerEbert.com) and me.

Of the other four Drama nominees, “The Imitation Game” is the only film to merit the support of any of our Experts. Edward Douglas (Coming Soon) is in its corner. That lone vote translates to odds of 8 to 1 to pull off an upset. Although none of the other three nominees are predicted to win by our Experts, “Selma” and “The Theory of Everything” have slightly better odds of 50 to 1 — versus “Foxcatcher” at 100 to 1 — because they are ranked higher overall.

Similarly, Douglas is the sole Expert touting “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and it too has odds of 8 to 1 to win. “Into the Woods” is at 50 to 1 while both “Pride” and “St. Vincent” are at 100 to 1.
