On the most recent season of “The Big Bang Theory,” nerdy characters Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) finally shared a kiss on-screen. That highly anticipated moment was the culmination of an unusual relationship that began with a guest spot by Bialik in the third season closer.
Discussing that moment in “The Locomotive Manipulation” during our recent webcam chat, Bialik revealed, “It means a lot on two levels. It means a lot for the characters to be moving to that place after so many years. Especially the way our writers chose to do it was really elegant and really touching and beautiful.”
And, as she added, “it also means a lot to the actors, for me and Jim to get to the place in our acting process where we’re ready for that and our characters are ready for that. That’s a very intimate moment.”
Bialik reaped her third Emmy nomination as Best Comedy Supporting Actress. Her competition this year is two-time winner Julie Bowen (“Modern Family“), Anna Chlumsky (“Veep“), Allison Janney (“Mom“), Kate McKinnon (“Saturday Night Live“), and Kate Mulgrew (“Orange is the New Black“).
While she considered submitting this “kiss” episode to the Emmy judging panel, she went with “The Indecision Amalgamation” on the advice of three-time Emmy champ Parsons and executive producer Bill Prady. In that episode Amy pretends to be interested in Sheldon’s dilemma over choosing a gaming system. They have a very funny exchange at the dining room table early in the episode which ends with them at the store where Amy buys him both systems to stop the debate.
Earlier this year, Bialik earned her first ever individual Screen Actors Guild nomination It was an impressive feat considering SAG combines lead and supporting performers together and has just five nominees in each category. As she explained, “that was the main reason I totally did not have it on my radar that I might be nominated. There is no supporting category, and I’m clearly a supporting actresss and happy to go. So it was very, very surprising and just such an honor to be acknowledged by the SAG community because it’s literally actors who know how hard it is to do what we do.”
