Part one of the two-part “Project Runway” finale began with the final four designers – Char Glover, Kini Zamora, Amanda Valentine, and Sean Kelly – being flown to Rome, Italy, to take inspiration from one of the most historically rich countries in the world. Kelly took inspiration for his 10-piece collection from the rise and fall of Julius Caesar, but it was another designer who felt the sting of the judges’ daggers.
… And no, it wasn’t Char.
Glover has struggled throughout the season, coming back from elimination after being resurrected by the Tim Gunn Save. She has survived each week, but finished with low scores for the last three challenges in a row. But while the judges gave her strong notes when she previewed three of her looks to them – they wanted to see more of her eccentric personality in her designs – it was, surprisingly, Zamora who incited the judges’ wrath.
Zamora is usually a judges’ darling. He won three design challenges, finished with high scores four other times, and only received low scores once during the entire season. So this may have been his worst runway presentation ever, with Heidi Klum describing his preview looks as “old-lady” and Zac Posen saying they were “not cool, not sexy, not edgy.” Klum recommended that, with just one day left, Zamora redesign his entire collection.
Is Zamora doomed? If so, you may need to change your predictions (click here to do so), because Zamora has led our racetrack odds for the last three weeks in a row. Going into this week’s episode, he was in first place with 14/5 odds, followed by Valentine and Kelly with 7/2 odds and Glover with 4/1 odds. But it all comes down to next week’s Fashion Week runway show. It’s the design challenge to end all design challenges, and despite his past successes, Zamora may need a miracle to recover.
Valentine got the most positive feedback from judges. Posen was wowed by the custom jewelry she designed to accessorize her looks, and Klum wanted to buy her designs outright, though Nina Garcia warned her to move away from the long, flowing, bohemian styles she has gravitated towards in the past – it’s time for her to raise her game.
As for Gold Derby’s own predictions game, our user Ryan Lapierre leads all scorers, followed by Umur Cagin Tas and Marcelo Henn (click here to see where you rank). Can anyone overtake Lapierre with one week left in the competition? Whoever scores the most game points at the end of the season wins a $100 Amazon gift certificate.
