“It’s a big year for big budget, stupid movies,” Razzie Awards chief John Wilson roars in our webcam chat. “Hollywood was taken aback by how many $200 million movies fell on their butts.”
Quite a few ended up on today’s Razzie list of nominations, including “The Lone Ranger” and “After Earth,” both contenders for Worst Picture. (See the full list here.) But the flick with the most bids is Worst Picture nominee “Grown Ups 2” featuring Razzie darling (and Worst Actor nominee) Adam Sandler.
Wilson is surprised by the inclusion of “Movie 43” in the Worst Picture category, since it’s not as well known as other contenders. Wilson describes it as “a pornographic version of ‘Love, American Style.’ It’s got scenes like one where Hugh Jackman has a scrotum on his neck. Just really tasteless stuff. I’m somewhat pleased and surprised it made it into the five.”
Wilson is also happy that “our old stalwart” Sly Stallone is back in contention. “For the first few decades of the Razzies he was in there every frickin’ year,” he adds. “I think it’s kind of cool that he’s back.”
It wouldn’t be a great Razzie dishfest unless I gave my ole pal Wilson my usual grief over once hailing “Mommie Dearest” with five Razzies, including Worst Picture and Actress (Faye Dunaway). But after all these years of past battles, he’s ready for me and harrumphs right back. Ha!
