UPSET at the Razzie Awards: ‘Movie 43’ wins Worst Picture

The motion picture academy may have a notoriously short memory, but Razzie Award voters reached back more than a year to decide their Worst Picture.

Movie 43,” released Jan. 25, 2013, was the winner of that dubious achievement, as well as Worst Director (for 13 credited filmmakers including Elizabeth Banks, Brett Ratner, and Peter Farrelly) and Worst Screenplay (19 writers were “honored” for their unfortunate contributions).

Movie 43” was a strong contender as soon as it was released to scathing reviews (18 on MetaCritic, 4% freshness on Rotten Tomatoes) and poor box office (less than $30 million worldwide), but it seemed to be overshadowed last summer by the higher profile critical flops “After Earth,” “The Lone Ranger,” and “Grown Ups 2,” which were all ahead of “Movie 43” in our racetrack odds.

Despite losing Worst Picture, “After Earth” managed to tie “Movie 43” with three wins of its own: Worst Actor (Jaden Smith), Worst Supporting Actor (Will Smith), and Worst Screen Combo for the father and son team.

The Lone Ranger” rode away with just one win from five nominations: Worst Remake, Ripoff, or Sequel.

Surprisingly, “Grown Ups 2,” which had a field-leading eight nominations, didn’t claim a single award. Adam Sandler had been on a “winning” streak at the Razzies, sweeping every category in 2011 for “Jack and Jill” and winning Worst Actor again in 2012 for “That’s My Boy.”

Worst Actress went to Tyler Perry for his drag performance as Madea in “A Madea Christmas.” It’s only the second time a man has won the category, following Sandler as the title twin sister in “Jack and Jill.” It’s also the first Razzie Award for Perry, who has reaped multiple bids over the last two years for his various writing, directing, producing, and acting work in “Alex Cross,” “Madea’s Witness Protection,” “Good Deeds,” and “Temptation” in addition to “Madea Christmas.”

And “Temptation” rounded out the winners winning Worst Supporting Actress for tabloid target Kim Kardashian.

  1. I’m kicking myself for underestimating Movie 43 at the Razzies. All I’ve heard about the movie since it opened was how it was “the worst movie ever” — it makes perfect sense that it would “win” so huge.
