Will Ricky Gervais be able to conquer the Emmy Awards again in 2014? He already has two trophies for his previous series “The Office” and “Extras” and now returns with the Netflix comedy “Derek. We will ask him about his new series when he joins us for a live chat this Tuesday, May 27, at 3:00 p.m. PT/ 6:00 p.m. ET on Gold Derby’s home page.
As with most of his projects, Gervais is the producer, director, writer, and star of “Derek.” His lead character of Derek Noakes is a care worker in a nursing home for the elderly. He has good intentions, loves reality programs and game shows, and talking about animals. The first season unspooled on the streaming Netflix service last September. The second season debuts this Friday, May 30.
Gervais has said that the show was inspired by several of his relatives who work in care homes and assisting others. His sister helps children with learning disabilities. His sister-in-law works with people who have Alzheimer’s. Four of his nieces assist in nursing homes.
Gervais first became known in America for the British version of “The Office,” for which he won Golden Globes for Best TV Comedy Series and Best TV Comedy Actor in 2004. He would go on to roast and host that celebrity-filled party in 2010, 2011, and 2012.
The Americanized version of “The Office” debuted in 2005 with Steve Carell in the starring role, similar to Gervais’ role as David Brent in the U.K. That show would prevail at the Emmys as Best Comedy Series in 2006, earning him a trophy as its executive producer. He won another Emmy in 2007, this time as Best Comedy Actor for HBO’s “Extras” (beating Carell no less). Over his career, he has racked up 20 nominations in all.
