Based upon his recent dominance of the Emmy race for Best Comedy Actor (he’s won 3 out of the past 4 years), Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory“) is the clear fave to prevail again. Among our Experts and Users, he leads with 10-to-9 odds. However, our Editors favor a different nominee: Ricky Gervais (“Derek”) leads with 8-to-11 odds. (See the odds charts here.) Why?
The reason: We’ve actually watched all of the episodes submitted to Emmy judges as an example of their best work from the past TV season. These entries will decide who wins and loses. (See full list here.)
Gervais submitted episode six of season two of “Derek” – one of the most jolting surprises among all contender entries this year. His character, Derek, is an emotionally stunted man with a big heart who works in a nursing home and he faces extraordinary challenges: going out on a rare date, coping with the slow death of his father and with his own lack of coordination skills while trying to ride a bicycle. The episode’s got a knock-your-block-off finale that leaves every viewer in a puddle of tears unless he has a brick in his chest where his heart should be.
Don’t make the mistake of underestimating Gervais. In 2007, as the star of “Extras,” Gervais pulled off a jaw-dropping victory over Alec Baldwin (“30 Rock“) and Steve Carell (“The Office”) in this same category.
Miss Hannigan: Of course he can and he will!
SxECanadianFanSxE: Gervais is fantastic in his ep, so I think he wins quite easily.
KyleBailey: If anyone is going to beat Parsons, I think it would be Macy. Gervais, who I normally love, is actually quite annoying on the show. I really don’t think it is a very good performance compared to what I know Gervais is capable of.
Tony DiMeo: Ricky Ricky Ricky! That is all I have to say
dude93: Gervais is so winning. Jon Cryer won in 2012 for having an incredibly rangey, empathetic episode, and Gervais will win for the exact same reason.
