Emmys shocker: ‘Shameless’ allowed to switch to comedy AFTER three years

Shameless” has not had much luck at the Emmys for its first three seasons. Indeed, the Showtime series has been shut out of these kudos save for three consecutive Drama Guest Actress bids by Joan Cusack.

However, that losing streak could change this year with Tuesday’s news that the TV academy has approved a request by the producers of the Showtime series to allow it to switch genres and contend over on the comedy side.

Indeed, with the departure of perennial nominee “30 Rock, there is an opportunity for a new entry in the Comedy Series race. Likewise in the performance categories.

Comedy Actress has at least two openings with “30 Rock” creator Tina Fey no longer eligible and 2013 nominee Laura Dern from the axed series “Enlightened out of the running as well. Could “Shameless” star Emmy Rossum reap her first Emmy bid for her sericomic performance as the put-upon Fiona Gallagher?

And with “30 Rock” leading man Alec Baldwin and Arrested Development star Jason Bateman out of contention for Comey Actor, Emmy darling William H. Macy might finally be recognized for his change-of-pace part on “Shameless” as the ne’er-do-well patriarch of the Gallagher clan.

Unlike the recent declaration of itself as a comedy by the freshman series “Orange is the New Black,” which had submitted in drama at the guilds and Globes, “Shameless” needed to get special dispensation as it has a track record with the Emmys.
