With the premiere of “Survivor: San Juan del Sur” just days away on CBS, two of Gold Derby’s reality TV gurus — myself and Rob Licuria — sat down to talk you through all of the 18 new castaways and twists coming to Season 29. Yes, you read that right: It’s been 29 seasons already. (Watch our preshow slugfest below.)
Among the new contestants who’ll be playing against their loved ones in the second cycle of the popular “Blood vs. Water” format are a racist baseball player (John Rocker), two former “Amazing Race” twins (Nadiya Anderson and Natalie Anderson) and a pair of gay New York actors (Josh Canfield and Reed Kelly).
In our slugfest, Rob and I both announce our early picks for who we think will win Season 29. While I’m sticking my neck out for 20-year-old Baylor Wilson (daughter of thrice-divorced Missy Payne), Rob is going with likeable 31-year-old thespian Reed.
We also discuss the season’s Exile Island twist, the potential devastating weather in Nicaragua and the greatness of long-time host Jeff Probst. Is Probst going to host this thing until the end of time, or could there be an end date in sight for the four-time Emmy winner?
According to exclusive Gold Derby racetrack odds, Reed has the best shot of winning the season with leading 15/2 odds, followed by Louisiana firefighter Wes Nale in second place with 10/1 odds and Florida student Alec Christy in third place with 11/1 odds.
