Best Tony Awards experts: Thom Geier (EW), Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil & Paul Sheehan

Fifteen Tonys Experts entered predictions at Gold Derby and three earned the biggest bragging rights: Thom Geier (Entertainment Weekly) and Gold Derby’s own Tom O’Neil and Paul Sheehan scored 85%; only one user among almost 500 total predictors scored better.

Those three Experts missed only four categories out of 26, including three that all the experts got wrong: Play Revival, Play Direction, and Play Featured Actress (Sophie Okonedo), which were all awarded to underdog “A Raisin in the Sun.”

Geier, O’Neil, and Sheehan also missed Sound Design of a Musical, predicting “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” instead of winner “Beautiful.” Only one Expert got that right: David Sheward (TheaterLife), who scored 66% overall.

The next three Experts scored 81%: Wayman Wong (Talkin Broadway), Doug Strassler (NY Press), annd Matt Windman (amNY).

Three others scored 74%: Michael Musto (Out.com), Harry Haun (Playbill), and Scott Feinberg (Hollywood Reporter).

Andy Humm (Gay USA), Brian Lipton (Cititour), and Melissa Bernardo (Entertainment Weekly) correctly predicted 70% of categories.

David Sheward (TheaterLife) and Susan Haskins (Theater Talk) were right 66% of the time, while Andy Lefkowitz (Theatermania) scored 62%.

Collectively, the Experts ruled our Tony predictions with a 74% average, beating our Users (67%) and Editors (63%).
