ACM Awards: Can defending champ Band Perry hold off Little Big Town for Vocal Group?

In the last 12 years, only four groups have won Vocal Group of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards, and all are nominated again this year: Rascal Flatts (2002-2008), Lady Antebellum (2009-2011), Little Big Town (2012), and the defending champs The Band Perry (2013). Rounding out the category is six-time nominated Zac Brown Band.

ACM Awards: Complete list of nominations

Even though Band Perry are the incumbents, they’re not the frontrunners in this race. Rather, Little Big Town — the only nominees up for another award with an Album of the Year bid for “Pain Killer” — are expected to finally pick up a bookend to that 2012 trophy. They get 4/11 odds based on support from all five Gold Derby Editors, 18 of our Top 24 Users (those readers who got the best scores predicting last year’s awards), and 56% of all Users.

Ranked second with 6/1 odds are Lady Antebellum. None of our Editors expect them to prevail, but three of our top users do: MatthewDiFeo, JDMintz and Mike_Warren. They’re also backed by 26% of all Users.

The Band Perry trail in third place with 12/1 odds and support from three top users – dwb585, Riaan and Derek Schultz – and 9% of all Users.

Rascal Flatts is backed by 5% of Users, and Zac Brown Band is predicted by 4% of Users. Both trail with 50/1 odds.

The ACM Awards have gotten progressively harder to predict in recent years. Last year, our overall odds managed a score of 18% while our Top 24 Users did slightly better with 27%. That was down from 2012, when we collectively predicted 36%, and way down from 2011, when we scored 55%. That means all of Gold Derby’s predictors are hoping to make a comeback, and you can help.

Remember that coming out on top doesn’t just mean predicting the right winners. You also have to use your three big bets (one of 500 points and two of 200 points) strategically to score the most game points. If you bet on a long shot who pulls off an upset you can really rack up the points. As we use those point totals to break ties when more than one user tops our leaderboard with the same number of correct answers, don’t take them for granted.
