Mendez tells Gold Derby’s Chris Beachum how he came to learn of his nomination, saying, “We were watching the live stream announcement. We were heartbroken that ‘Jane’ and Gina didn’t get nominated. We knew our category wasn’t going to be broadcast, so after they finished that, we kept refreshing the page for the full list.”

His rival nominees for Best Narrator are Neil deGrasse Tyson (“Hubble’s Cosmic Journey”), Miranda Richardson (“Operation Orangutan”), Peter Coyote (“The Roosevelts”) and Henry Strozier (“Too Cute”). Regarding his competition, Mendez gushes, “Peter Coyote is a legend, an icon. If any [young] narrator is coming up, he’s the guy to look up to.”

Mendez admits that he doesn’t get too caught up in the show’s hit ratings for the CW, but says, “It’s something to quietly celebrate.” As for the Creative Arts Emmys, which will be held Sept. 12, Mendez jokes, “It’s gonna be the best date night ever.”
