Gold Derby’s Executive Editor Paul Sheehan and I were both bested in our Critics’ Choice Awards nominations predictions by long-time Gold Derby contributor and forum poster Riley Chow (screen name thedemonhog). Chow scored a staggering 84% on the TV side and an 85% predicting the film champs, compared to Sheehan’s 57% for TV and 80% for film and my 48% for TV and 69% for film. How’d he do it? Watch our new slugfest webchat below for all of Chow’s prediction tips and secrets.
“In this case it’s the critics, and right now ‘The Leftovers‘ is the most critically acclaimed drama of the titles that were eligible. I thought that for sure that would get in, but Gold Derby had it ranked way down in 10th for both Drama Series and Drama Actor (Justin Theroux).”
The battle between “The Leftovers” and “Mr. Robot” for Best Drama Series “is a tough one,” he adds. “I think that the Critics’ Choice nominations are much edgier than their winners. I would think that ‘Mr. Robot’ is a bit more mainstream, so I’d go for that one.”
As for Best Comedy Series, Chow remarks, “‘Transparent‘ got more nominations than last year, and last year they also didn’t award it so I think they might want to play catch-up there.”
