The judges giveth, and the judges taketh away on “Dancing With the Stars.” Poor Alexa PenaVega has been feeling the sting of inconsistent scores, but is it her dancing or the judging that has really been inconsistent?
On Monday night the contestants recreated famous dances, and PenaVega delivered a cha cha inspired by Britney Spears‘s snake-assisted VMAs performance from 2001, but the judges thought it was a step down from last week, when they gave her the first perfect score (40 out of 40) of the season. Maybe she didn’t dance quite at the level of her “Switch-Up” tango with Derek Hough, but did she really deserve a 10-point drop? She scored a total of 30 based on a pair of 8s from Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli, and 7s from Julianne Hough and guest judge Olivia Newton-John – and guest judges are usually more generous than the rest of the panel.
Later in the evening, Inaba criticized Nick Carter‘s “Saturday Night Fever”-inspired disco samba for having problems similar to PenaVega’s dance, but she scored him a point higher (9 instead of 8), and the rest of the panel gave Carter 10s.
This isn’t the first time the judges have graded PenaVega harshly. After bobbling a step at the end of her foxtrot on “Most Memorable Year” night, they gave her straight 7s, which put her near the bottom of the leaderboard. But this time around she’s dead last, tied with Alek Skarlatos for the lowest score. That suddenly puts her at risk of elimination – again. At the end of Monday night’s show she was announced to be in jeopardy, which left her in tears. Paula Deen was sent home instead, but next week PenaVega may not be so lucky.
