Is it time to take singer Andy Grammer seriously as a contender on "Dancing With the Stars"? Early on this season he was mostly a middle-of-the-pack performer, but after two weeks in a row with perfect-scoring routines, should we start moving him up in our predictions for the mirror ball trophy?
Musicians often do well on "DWTS," but unlike this season's Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter and past champs Drew Lachey and Nicole Scherzinger, dancing isn't a big part of Grammer's act. But on "Famous Dances" night he excelled with a "Singin' in the Rain"-inspired jazz routine. Gene Kelly is a tough act to follow, but Grammer earned a perfect 40 out of 40 from the judges.
Then in Monday night's Halloween special, he performed a solid paso doble (scoring 26 out of 30) followed by a group dance that received a perfect 30; Derek Hough's team fell short of that mark, which was the first time in the show's history that Hough ever lost a group dance. Hough and his star Bindi Irwin still claimed the top spot on the judges' leaderboard, but Grammer ended up tied with Carlos PenaVega for second place.
But our predictions don't yet reflect his recent improvement. In week one, before he even stepped foot on the dance floor, he ranked sixth with odds of 50/1 based on support from just 2% of readers who have entered our predictions contest. But that was his highest ranking to date, and as of this writing he trails with 100/1 odds despite coming off his two strongest weeks.
Right now it looks like Grammer is an underdog, but he may become a dark horse. Don't forget, his pro partner Allison Holker trained another musician, Riker Lynch, to a runner-up finish just last season.
