Bindi Irwin seems to be an unstoppable force now on “Dancing With the Stars.” In the Halloween special, she and pro partner Derek Hough performed both an Argentine tango and a “Ghostbusters”-themed group dance, and her combined score put her on top of the leaderboard for the fifth time this season. That despite the fact that her team lost the head-to-head team dance, which was the first time Derek has ever lost a team dance.
Irwin scored a perfect 30 out of 30 for her Argentine tango, and then 28 out of 30 for the team dance, putting her on top with a total score of 58. Gold Derby’s odds, based on the forecasts of those readers who have entered our predictions contest, expected that to happen. She had even odds (1/1) of getting the highest judges’ marks based on 50% of our users predicting that result.
The bottom of the leaderboard wasn’t a surprise either. Though Alek Skarlatos had a solid first dance with partner Lindsay Arnold (scoring 25), he joined Irwin on the losing side of the team dance, which just barely knocked him to the bottom of the leaderboard with a combined score of 53. But the fact that only five points separate first and last place shows how tightly competitive the season has gotten. Nevertheless, 50% of readers anticipated his low score, which also gave him even odds.
The only result that took us by surprise was the elimination. Skarlatos got last week’s lowest score also, so he was expected to get the boot (3/2 odds, with 40% predicting), but instead it was Vine star Hayes Grier who was sent home. Only 22% of readers saw that coming, which gave him odds of 7/2. Grier entered the competition with millions of online fans, which we thought might have carried him through a while longer, but his online popularity didn’t translate to the votes he needed to survive. However, he did go out on a high note, tying for the second highest score of the night (56).
Only two users scored 100% perfect predictions for the week: Chris51501 and Dehlavi. Neither of them had an especially high points total based on their betting, but Chris51501’s 716.67 points was enough to edge out Dehlavi’s even 600 for the top spot on our leaderboard.
How did he pull off that high score? He didn’t get very many points predicting Skarlatos’s low score or Irwin’s high score, but he bet on Grier’s elimination when he had 9/2 odds, resulting in a 450-point payout. That was just enough to put him over the edge. Click the chart below for this week’s complete results:
Keep your point bets in mind making your predictions: coming out on top doesn’t just mean answering the week’s questions correctly. You also have to use your three big bets (one of 500 points and two of 200 points) strategically to score the most game points. If you bet on a long shot who pulls off an upset, you can really rack up the points. As we use those point totals to break ties when more than one user tops our leaderboard with the same number of correct predictions (as happened this week), don’t take them for granted.
There has been another shakeup on our overall leaderboard for the season to date. After last week’s tie between Denton Davidson and WiltedYouth for the top spot, now Denton drops to second with 62% accuracy while WiltedYouth is now alone at the top with 67%.
Denton missed two questions on Monday night, correctly forecasting only Skarlatos’s low score. But WiltedYouth predicted two out of three results: Irwin’s high score and Grier’s elimination.
Who do you think will be eliminated next week? Refer to this week’s scores below before making your predictions:
Bindi Irwin – 30 + 28 = 58
Andy Grammer – 26 + 30 = 56

Carlos PenaVega – 28 + 28 = 56
Alexa PenaVega – 27 + 28 = 55
Tamar Braxton – 24 + 30 = 54
Nick Carter – 24 + 30 = 54
