Gold Derby has exclusively learned the episode that will be submitted to the Emmys by Taraji P. Henson from “Empire” as Best Drama Actress. She is entering the “Pilot” episode for the Fox drama series.
For the freshman program, Henson plays Cookie Lyon, the outspoken ex-wife of hip hop mogul Lucious Lyon. As he is making the decision of which of their three sons will take over the business one day, Cookie emerges from a 17-year stretch in prison for drug dealing. She is determined to reclaim her share of Empire Entertainment and bring the family back together.
This is her second career Emmy nomination after another in 2011 for Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actress in “Taken From Me: The Tiffany Rubin Story.”
We will continue to reveal all other Emmy submissions this year for the series and acting races as they are provided to us by networks, studios, or personal reps.
Who do you think will win as Best Drama Actress? Henson competes in a category with two-time champ Claire Danes (“Homeland“), previous nominees Elisabeth Moss (“Mad Men“) and Robin Wright (“House of Cards“), and newcomers Viola Davis (“How to Get Away with Murder“) and Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black“).
