Golden Globe predictions: Caitriona Balfe (‘Outlander’) vs. Taraji P. Henson (‘Empire’) for TV Drama Actress

Before Golden Globe nominations were announced, Taraji P. Henson was the heavy favorite to win Best TV Drama Actress for FOX’s music-industry soap “Empire,” but after “Outlander‘s” strong showing in the nominations (it’s up for three awards, including Best Drama Series), Caitriona Balfe looks like a force to be reckoned with. Gold Derby’s Editors – those of us who cover awards year-round – are split down the middle.

Three of us – Chris Beachum, Marcus Dixon and I – are predicting Henson will win, giving her 11/10 odds. This is the first Golden Globe nomination for the actress, who enjoyed breakout success this year as music matriarch Cookie Lyon on “Empire” but was already a past Oscar nominee (Best Supporting Actress for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” 2008). The Globes love movie stars who do TV, like Robin Wright (“House of Cards“), who won this award two years ago, and Cookie is arguably the most iconic new character of 2015.

But the other three editors – Rob Licuria, Tom O’Neil and Paul Sheehan – say Balfe has the edge, which also gives  her 11/10 odds. The “Outlander” star isn’t as much of a household name as Henson, and the Starz period drama isn’t as widely seen as the broadcast ratings blockbuster “Empire,” but you could say the same thing about Ruth Wilson, who won for the premium cable drama “The Affair” last year against A-list star Viola Davis in the breakout network hit “How to Get Away with Murder.” The fact that the Golden Globes also nominated “Outlander” for both Best Drama and Best TV Supporting Actor (Tobias Menzies) might indicate that it has even more support from voters than “Empire” does.

Viola Davis is back in this year’s race, but none of our Editors are predicting her to win this time around. She ranks third with 50/1 odds.

Wright, the 2013 champ, trails with 80/1 odds, as does first-time nominee Eva Green (“Penny Dreadful“).

  1. I think if voters are considering Season One (first half) of Empire, then Henson wins hands down. If it’s Season Two (yawn), it’s a wide open category. Since this is the Globes, I would not count out Balfe or Green, both spectacular this past season. Wright was good enough to sneak in as well, but I think she won two seasons ago, so that pretty much discounts her.

  2. Its a bit insulting to compare Caitriona Balfe´s performence to Ruth Wilsons. Ruth Wilson was terrific (especially in ep. 9) in the Affair and got wide critical acclaim. Balfe not so much and inviting the HFPA and sending them present certainly helps to get a nominations. And lets not forget, who votes for the Globes. Yes, Tarajii created that icon character, which should give her the edge to win. Would love to see Eva Green win, since she gave – according to critics – the best female performence of the year. But then, never count out Viola Davis, who gave also a great versatile performence and it would be great to see an African-American woman win.

  3. I love Taraji in Empire and I love that show. But Outlander is way better than Empire. And Caitriona carries the entire show, she is literally in every scene every episode. So Caitriona should hands down win.

  4. Maybe it’s just because I think Empire is so overrated and over the top (couldn’t make it past the first 20 minutes of the pilot) but I don’t see either Henson or Balfe getting this one. Empire is more or less a soap. Balfe’s nomination is her award. The real race is between Viola Davis and Ruth Wilson in my opinion, the two award-winning actresses in respected shows. No one cares about Balfe or Henson.

  5. Balfe is one of the most limited actresses I have ever seen . I am shocked that anyone with a brain thinks she should be compared to any of the women nominated.
