‘Boyhood’ will rule Independent Spirit Awards, ‘Birdman’ and ‘Nightcrawler’ will also score

We’re forecasting 11 categories at the Independent Spirit Awards, which take place on Saturday, February 21, the day before the Oscars. According to the combined predictions of our experts, editors, and users, “Boyhood” will sweep four of its five nominations: Best Feature, Best Director (Richard Linklater), Best Supporting Female (Patricia Arquette), and Best Editing.

Which Oscars contender for Best Picture will win first at Indie Spirits?

Birdman” led the nominations with six, but it won’t go away empty handed. It will win Best Male Lead (Michael Keaton) as well as Best Cinematography. The film is also favored to win the Oscar for its cinematography the following night, but Keaton ranks second in our odds to win the Oscar against Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything“), who is absent from the Spirit Awards because “Theory” is a British production.

Also expected to win twice is “Nightcrawler,” for which writer-director Dan Gilroy is expected to take Best Screenplay and Best First Feature.

Julianne Moore (“Still Alice“) is expected to continue her march to the Oscar podium with a win for Best Female Lead, while J.K. Simmons (“Whiplash“) should continue his awards dominance by taking Best Supporting Male.

Dear White People,” Justin Simien‘s acclaimed indie about racism on a college campus, gets best odds to win Best First Screenplay.

Oscars predictions: Experts split on Best Picture with 15 for ‘Birdman,’ 13 for ‘Boyhood

Winners are chosen by members of Film Independent. The prizes will be handed out during an afternoon ceremony in Santa Monica. For the first time, this kudos fest will air live on IFC.
