Yes, ‘Inside Amy Schumer’ really can crush ‘Saturday Night Live’ at Emmys

The Emmys are notorious for honoring the same shows and stars year after year, which is why the Best Variety Sketch Series race is so exciting: it’s a brand new category where anything can happen.

While Gold Derby’s Experts, Top 24 Users and All Users predict a victory for 40-year-old “Saturday Night Live,” our Editors have gone rogue, thinking an upset will happen in the form of “Inside Amy Schumer.” Are we crazy, or might we be onto something here?

The other three — Matt Noble, Tom O’Neil and Paul Sheehan — are rooting for stalwart “Saturday Night Live,” giving it 7/2 odds. (Click on any of our gold-colored names to see our full Emmy predix.)

Schumer may very well be a double nominee at the Emmys this year, for both producing and starring on the popular sketch show on Comedy Central.

Just like Melissa McCarthy in 2011, Schumer could get a boost from her summer comedy flick “Trainwreck” that hits theaters during Emmy voting. McCarthy won her Emmy for “Mike & Molly,” but many awards pundits wondered if her film “Bridesmaids” have helped push her over the edge.

“Trainwreck” has an impressive 87 score at Metacritic and a perfect 100% at Rotten Tomatoes, suggesting we need to be taking Schumer’s newfound industry buzz and acclaim seriously heading into this Emmy season.

The critics agree. Schumer won Best Comedy Actress in a bit of an upset at the Critics’ Choice TV Awards last month and she’s nominated for two awards (actress and series) at the upcoming Television Critics Association kudos.

What do YOU think, Derbyites? Will “Inside Amy Schumer” take down the grandfather of all sketch shows at the Emmys, or will it play second fiddle to “SNL”?

Making your predictions is fun and easy. Just log into your Gold Derby account, or you can register for a free account via Facebook, Twitter or Google.

After logging in, click on the “Predictions” button found at the top-right of every page. That will bring you to a list of every event currently being predicted at Gold Derby — everything from the Emmys and TCA Awards to “Big Brother” and “Survivor.” See here:

Click on any box and then scroll down to start making your predictions. For each awards show, cast your votes on all of the categories relating to that event.

If you click on the “Emmy Nominations” button and scroll down to the very bottom, you’ll see something like this:

To vote for who you think will win Best Variety Sketch Series, DRAG six contenders from the left column and DROP them into the right column, arranging them by likelihood of winning.

Every time someone logs their predictions, the racetrack odds of the contestants are automatically updated. If the majority of users think “Inside Amy Schumer” will win, that means it’ll have the best odds and will go to the front of the pack. Conversely, the contenders who don’t receive many predictions have the worst odds and will go to the bottom of the pile.

Remember that coming out on top doesn’t just mean predicting the categories correctly. You also have to use your three big bets (500 points and two of 200 points) strategically to score the most game points. If you bet on a longshot who pulls off an upset, you can really rack up the points, so don’t take them for granted.
