Makeup & Hairstyling Guild Awards winners: ‘Grand Budapest Hotel,’ ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ …

At Saturday’s Makeup & Hairstyling Guild Awards, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” — the Oscar frontrunner for Best Makeup & Hairstyling — won prizes for both period/character hairstyling and makeup.  One of its two rivals at the Oscars — “Guardians of the Galaxy‘ — won both contemporary and special makeup (the other Oscar nominee, “Foxcatcher” contended in that latter category.) However, “Guardians” lost the contemporary hairstyling race to “Birdman.”

In a sign of that film’s strength across the guilds, Birdman” also pulled off an upset at the Cinema Audio Society awards on Saturday winning Best Sound Mixing over Oscar frontrunners “American Sniper” and “Interstelllar.”
