At Saturday’s Makeup & Hairstyling Guild Awards, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” — the Oscar frontrunner for Best Makeup & Hairstyling — won prizes for both period/character hairstyling and makeup. One of its two rivals at the Oscars — “Guardians of the Galaxy‘ — won both contemporary and special makeup (the other Oscar nominee, “Foxcatcher” contended in that latter category.) However, “Guardians” lost the contemporary hairstyling race to “Birdman.”
In a sign of that film’s strength across the guilds, “Birdman” also pulled off an upset at the Cinema Audio Society awards on Saturday winning Best Sound Mixing over Oscar frontrunners “American Sniper” and “Interstelllar.”
The guild resurrected its awards last year after a nine-year hiatus. “Dallas Buyers Club” won the Period/Character Makeup prize from the guild before prevailing at the Oscars.
One of its rival Oscar nominees, “Bad Grandpa,” claimed the Special Makeup Effects award from the guild.
However, the third Oscar contender, “The Lone Ranger,” was shut out.
Among TV series this year, “Downton Abbey” won both period hairstyling and makeup prizes, “Dancing With the Stars” took contemporary hairstyling, “Sons of Anarchy” claimed contemporary makeup and “The Walking Dead” walked away with special makeup.
On the telefilm/miniseries side, the big winner was “American Horror Story: Freak Show,” which claimed both period prizes as well as special makeup. “Fargo” won contemporary makeup while “Sherlock” took contemporary hairstyling.
At the awardsfest, which was staged at Paramount Studios, makeup wiz and current contender Rick Baker (“Maleficent”) was feted for his lifetime of achievement as was Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell.
