The season eight finale of “The Big Bang Theory” was a shocker as Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) dumped her esrtwhile boyfriend Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons). Could this be the end of the road for our favorite odd couple? The TV vet, who started out as a guest star in the third season closer, reveals during our recent webcam chat (watch below) that, “I don’t know if I consider it breaking up. The writers were very specific with the language that they used. Amy needed some time, she needed to step back.”
And, as she adds, “The way I see it, this is a sense of breathing space and the relationship allows for that.” And discussing that final moment in “The Commitment Determination” — when it is revealed that Cooper was planning to propose — the actress admits “When we did the table read, we were shocked. Everybody gasped. It is powerful.”
Bialik made her movie debut as the younger version of Bette Midler‘s character in the 1988 weeper “Beaches” and headlined “Blossom” for five seasons beginning in 1990. When that the laffer ended in 1995, she took a decade-long break from show business and earned a doctorate in neuroscience from UCLA. A three-episode arc on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” got her interested in acting again. After the overwhelmingly positive response to her guest shot on “Big Bang,” she returned in season four periodically and joined the show as a regular in season five.
Bialik has contended for Best Comedy Supporting Actress for three years running, losing first to Julie Bowen (“Modern Family“), then Merritt Wever (“Nurse Jackie“) and last year to Allison Janney (“Mom“).
