NAACP Image Awards nominations: ‘Creed,’ ‘Straight Outta Compton,’ ‘Beasts of No Nation’ …

Nominations for the 47th annual NAACP Image Awards were announced Tuesday. These kudos cover  a wide range of achievement in the arts. Oscar contenders dominated the film awards.

"Creed" leads with six nominations, including two for writer/director Ryan Coogler. And lead actor Michael B. Jordan also contends for the top prize, Entertainer of the Year. "Straight Outta Compton" reaped five bids while "Beasts of No Nation" picked up four. All three vie for Best Film as do "Concussion" and "Dope." And "Beasts of No Nation" is also in the running for Best Independent Film. 

On the TV side, "black-ish" has a leading 11 nominations while "Empire" has 10. Winners will be announced in a ceremony to air on TV One on February 5 to be hosted by "black-ish" star and nominee Anthony Anderson
