We’ve launched the Best Sound Mixing category in our Oscars predictions center. The categories of Sound Mixing and Sound Editing tend to award the same films — in the past 10 years they’ve matched six times, most recently the pair of 2013 wins for “Gravity” — but when there’s a split, it’s usually because there’s a musical in the running.
Strong support from the academy overall also helps; Best Sound Mixing often goes to the most action-packed Best Picture contender, like “The Hurt Locker,” “Inception,” “Hugo,” and the aforementioned “Gravity” in recent years.
Other action-packed spectacles with a chance to compete here include “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Jurassic World,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “In the Heart of the Sea,” “Spectre,” “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” and “Tomorrowland.”
And of course we can’t rule out this year’s musicals. “Straight Outta Compton” tells the story of pioneering rap group NWA and features performances of many of their songs. “Love and Mercy” is also a biopgraphical drama, showcasing Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson and his innovative work composing and recording their classic “Pet Sounds” album.
