All but two of our Oscar Experts predict “How to Train Your Dragon 2” will win Best Animated Feature, giving it leading odds of 2/13. It would be the first win in this category for DreamWorks since “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” in 2005.
Determining a winner based on the precursor awards is difficult. “The Lego Movie,” which won Best Animated Film at the BAFTAs, PGA Awards, and Critics’ Choice, wasn’t even nominated by the academy.
“Dragon 2” did win the Golden Globe and the Annie Award for Best Animated Feature. All but two Globe winners have repeated at the Oscars since the Hollywood Foreign Press established an animation category in 2006. But the Annie Awards are less often in sync with the academy. Indeed, the first “How to Train Your Dragon” film won the top Annie in 2010, but lost the Oscar to “Toy Story 3.”
