Oscars predictions: Experts predict ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ will win Costume Design

All but five of our Oscar Experts are predicting that guild champ Milena Canonero will win Best Costume Design for her work on the period picture “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” That overwhelming support gives her leading odds of 1/4 to take home her fourth Oscar after wins for “Barry Lyndon” (1975), “Chariots of Fire” (1981) and “Marie Antoinette” (2006),

However, four experts — Mike Cidoni (Associated Press), Thom GeierDave Karger (Fandango), and Kevin Polowy (Yahoo) — are forecasting an upset by another of the guild’s champ, Colleen Atwood, for her designs for the fantasy film “Into the Woods.” That support gives Atwood odds of 13/2 to win her fourth Oscar.

Nicole Sperling (Entertainment Weekly) is the only expert betting on “Maleficent,” giving it 20/1 odds. Those costumes were designed by Anna B. Sheppard, now a three-time Oscar-nominee.

No experts are predicting “Mr. Turner,” with costumes by past champ Jacqueline Durran (50/1 odds), or “Inherent Vice,” designed by another previous victor, Mark Bridges (100/1 odds).

“Grand Budapest Hotel” has already won Costume Design honors from BAFTA and Critics’ Choice. “Into the Woods” and “Mr. Turner” were also nominated by those two groups, while “Maleficent” and “Inherent Vice” were only nominated by Critics’ Choice.
