In a bidding war, Steven Spielberg is now set to direct a hot memoir for Warner Bros. with Jennifer Lawrence attached to star. Will Oscar voters take special note of this pairing for the adaptation of “It’s What I Do: A Photographer’s Life of Love and War”? The memoir by Lynsey Addario has had no shortage of bidders “for the life of a woman who goes into the most dangerous places in the world in search of truth.” Others in the auction included Reese Witherspoon, Darren Aronofsky (for Natalie Portman), Margot Robbie, and George Clooney. Is Dame Maggie Smith leaving “Downton Abbey” after the upcoming sixth season? She has won two Emmys for her role as the Dowager Countess on the BBC and PBS drama series. She says her character “certainly can’t keep going. To my knowledge, I must be 110 by now. We’re in to the late 1920s.” The departure might not happen for only her, however, because heavy rumors in the British press state that the show itself will not go on beyond next season. TV Guide

With a big Oscar push ahead, Netflix secures the rights to the African war film “Beasts of No Nation” for $12 million. The movie is directed by Emmy winner Cary Fukunaga (“True Detective“) and stars Idris Elba. The story is about a boy who is forced to join a group of soldiers in West Africa. The film must be released first in theaters in order to be eligible at the Academy Awards. Variety

Netflix also announces release dates for several new seasons and projects. The third season of “Orange is the New Black” will debut on June 12. New sci-fi program “Sense8” from Andy and Lana Wachowski arrives on June 5. The prequel comedy “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp” is due on July 17. Canadian sci-fi import “Between” with Jennette McCurdy releases in May. Stand-up specials from Chris D’Elia (April 17) and Jen Kirkman (May 22) will also premiere. USA Today

Emmy winner Allison Janney will be returning to “Masters of Sex” for its third season.
