It is no surprise that the Oscar frontrunner for Best Makeup & Hairstyling, “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” is predicted to take the guild award for Best Period/Character Makeup this coming Saturday. However, one of its two rivals at the Oscars — “Guardians of the Galaxy‘ — is predicted to do even better winning all three of its bids: both Contemporary Makeup and Hairstyling as well as Special Makeup (the only race in which the other Oscar nominee, “Foxcatcher,” contends).
While the makeup & hairstyling branch of the academy snubbed “Into the Woods,” the guild gave it three nominations. While it is predicted to lose the period/character makeup race to “Grand Budapest,” it will prevail over that film, among others, for Best Period/Character Hairstyling. It also contends for special makeup.
Last year, “Dallas Buyers Club” won the Period/Character Makeup prize here before prevailing at the Oscars. One of its rival Oscar nominees, “Bad Grandpa,” claimed the Special Makeup Effects prize while the third Oscar contender, “The Lone Ranger,” was shut out.
These awards will be handed out on Feb. 14 at Paramount Studios. Makeup wiz and current contender Rick Baker (“Maleficent”) will be feted for his lifetime of achievement as will Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell.
