All but two of our Oscar experts predict “The Grand Budapest Hotel” will win Best Production Design. That overwhelming support translates to leading odds of 2/13. It would be the first win for Adam Stockhausen, who lost his bid last year for “12 Years a Slave” to Catherine Martin (“The Great Gatsby”).
There are only two dissenters — Mike Cidoni (Associated Press) and Nicole Sperling (Entertainment Weekly) — who believe Disney’s fantasy musical “Into the Woods” has the advantage. It ranks second with 9/1 odds.
“The Grand Budapest Hotel” won Best Period Design at the Art Directors Guild Awards, in addition to taking Production Design honors at the BAFTAs and Critics’ Choice Awards.
“The Imitation Game” was also nominated for Period Design by the ADG. “Interstellar” and “Into the Woods” both lost the Fantasy Design category to “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which was snubbed by the academy. “Mr. Turner” is the only Oscar nominee that was snubbed at the guild kudos.
But the academy doesn’t always award the ADG’s favorite, even though the guild has three feature-film awards. The most recent disagreement was in 2012, when “Lincoln” surprised by taking the Oscar after losing the ADG’s Period Design prize to “Anna Karenina.”
