"It's been crazy," admits Rachel Bloom ("Crazy Ex-Girlfriend") during a recent webcam chat (watch below) when mention is made of her Best Comedy Actress nominations at both the Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards. As she recalls, "The Golden Globes day was nuts because I didn't know or think it was gonna happen, but I woke up at 5:00 to watch it anyway. And then it happened and then the next five hours it was like nonstop interviews. I was on three hours of sleep and everyone was giving me champagne, so I was like coffee high but then champagne drunk."

Not only is Bloom the star of CW's "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," she's also a co-creator along with Aline Brosh McKenna and one of the writers. Bloom plays Rebecca Bunch on the musical comedy, a successful New York lawyer who goes through a sort of midlife crisis and decides to chase happiness in the form of moving to the town of West Covina, CA where her ex-boyfriend Josh (Vincent Rodriguez) lives.

When we joke about whether she considers herself to be the new Meryl Streep following all of her acclaim, Bloom laughs, "Here's the thing: I don't go out much. This is my first day of not filming in quite some time. And I also know that this show was almost not a show. It took just one person — [CW President] Mark Pedowitz — to be like, I want to put this on the air."

She continues, "And so I am hyper aware of how many people there are with talent who, because there wasn't the one person who believed in them, don't have a TV show or didn't get that break."

Also in our chat, Bloom talks about the show's cast including Broadway vets Tovah Feldshuh as her mother and Donna Lynne Champlin as Paula, she teases production secrets from the opening "West Covina" production number, and discusses whether Rebecca will still be fawning over Josh if the show were to last seven or eight seasons.

At the Golden Globes, Bloom's rival nominees are Jamie Lee Curtis ("Scream Queens"), Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("Veep"), Gina Rodriguez ("Jane the Virgin") and Lily Tomlin ("Grace and Frankie").

And at the Critics' Choice Awards, Bloom competes against Rodriguez, Aya Cash ("You're the Worst"), Wendi McLendon-Covey ("The Goldbergs"), Tracee Ellis Ross ("Black-ish) and Constance Wu ("Fresh Off the Boat").

  1. You are underestimating Bloom in your Golden Globes predictions. No way is Dreyfus winning (this ain’t the Emmys), no chance for Curtis (WTF?), Tomlin will win Best Musical/Comedy Film Actress, and Rodriguez won last year. Bloom. She’s new, she’s funny and she’s a triple threat (funny/sings/dances). Critics Choice is a lot more competitive and difficult for her to win ( esp. against Ross and Wu).

  2. You read it here first. Rachel Bloom will win the Golden Globe for Best TV Comedy Actress. Here’s why: No way Globes go for Dreyfus (this ain’t the Emmyzzzzzz~), same for Curtis (WTF?), Tomlin is winning the Best Musical Comedy Film actress, and Rodriguez won last year. That leaves Bloom, she’s new, she’s in a hot show, and she’s a triple threat (funny, sings-great BTW, and dances). At Critics Choice, she has fierce competition from Ross and Wu, probably won’t win there.
